Meet the Team

Tim Bird, Founding Partner

People ask me what type of law I practice. If you, a family member or your company is facing a legal challenge which you need the help of a skilled and experienced professional to overcome, that’s the type of law I practice.

Tim graduated first in his class at Virginia Tech in Political Science, and went on to receive his law degree from the College of William & Mary. He began practicing law in 1995. Early in his career, he was a partner in a large Northern Virginia law firm where, in addition to having a private practice, he served as a Commissioner in Chancery, Motions Conciliator, and Neutral Case Evaluator for the 19th Judicial District. In 2003, Tim left the impersonal world of “big law” and returned to beautiful Southwest Virginia, where he opened his own law practice to better serve the individuals, families, and businesses of Smith Mountain Lake and its surrounding communities.

With Kheystone Legal, Tim focuses a large portion of his practice helping families, and the companies they own, navigate the many challenges of personal and business life. Just a few short years after returning to Southwest Virginia, Tim was recognized as one of the leading family law attorneys in the region. In addition, from 2012, and continuing to the present, Tim has been selected a Virginia “Super Lawyer”, a Master Barraster in the Ted Dalton Inn of Court, and a Distinguished Lawyer by the Expert Network. And he is a past President of the Franklin County Bar Association. Tim also enjoys serving the local community, as a past Board Member of the local Chamber of Commerce, a volunteer at numerous community events, and recreational sports coach.

Erin H. Slate, Paralegal

Erin graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ferrum College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology. She also received an Associate of Science degree in General Studies from Patrick Henry Community College. While attending Ferrum College, Erin worked as a legal intern for the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Patrick County.

After graduation, she began working as a receptionist, but was quickly promoted to a paralegal position in response to her skills and compassion in serving the firm’s clients. What Erin enjoys most about working at Kheystone Legal is her opportunity to provide a high quality of service to each client ensuring that no client ever feels they are just another number.

In her free time, she enjoys being with her husband and children, hunting, and boating on Smith Mountain Lake.
